Tech’s new perspective: Google Glass has altered the way Gretchen Andrus paints – and remembers – by giving her playback on every brushstroke
“It has changed the way I look at, understand, and share my art.” Gretchen Andrus is talking about how her life as a painter has been transformed by working with Google Glass. This leading-edge wearable tech has become an unobtrusive but impactful part of her day – whether she is out running or spending time in the studio creating one of her detailed, stylish cityscapes.
By recording her artistic process using the “point of view” recording technology within Google Glass, Andrus investigates new ways of sharing artistic process and draws interesting conclusions about how this sharing affects the viewer’s and the creator’s relationship to art. Key to what Google Glass enables her to share is how methodical her paintings are. By watching Andrus create paintings, viewers can develop an understanding of how many intricate decisions are made in the creative process.
These videos remind the viewer that art is different from most objects in the level of intention and care poured into making it. The intensity of focus. The Google Glass camera moves with the artist’s eye, recording Andrus’s every brushstroke, without in any way compromising her freedom. “I forget I am wearing it most of the time but I know I can wind back the Glass footage to any stage of the day’s painting and have a ringside view of what was happening on the canvas. Google Glass has increased the speed with which I can learn from my own mistakes.”
Google Glass also allows Andrus to constantly capture colours, images, and experiences while outside the studio. Instead of relying on memory, she can use this content as a visual library from which her paintings are made. By associating historic art and clips and images from her daily life with the painting of new artwork in her studio she is able to demystify elements of the artistic process while creating a new fascination with what art is – and how it can be made.
